Scholarships

 

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR 2010-2011 SCHOOL YEAR
 
FOR INCOMING FRESHMEN

 

Through the generosity of our supporters, Our Lady of Providence Junior-Senior High School sponsors the following scholarships available for students entering their freshman year (9th grade).  These scholarships are available to current students in the New Albany Deanery schools.

GUERIN SCHOLARSHIP - (3)

The Guerin Scholarship, equal to the value of one-half year tuition is presented to the students who place first, second and third in the Placement Exam.  It is renewable annually for four years.  This Scholarship is named in honor of the foundress of the Sisters of Providence, Saint Theodora Guerin. 

 

Note:  Only students entering 9th grade in the following August are eligible.  Guerin winners must have taken the test at Providence.  Students who are awarded this scholarship are not eligible for the $1000 Ritter Scholarship.  Recipients must stay within attendance and behavioral guidelines and maintain an average GPA of 2.75 or better.

 

RITTER SCHOLARSHIP – (30) - to Deanery School Students

The Ritter Scholarship is a $1,000 tuition scholarship awarded to thirty (30) eighth grade students in each New Albany Deanery grade school annually.  The student must take the Placement Exam at Providence.  The Scholarship is named in honor of New Albany native Cardinal Ritter, who was instrumental in opening Catholic schools to children of all races. 

 

Students who wish to apply must complete an application and write an essay.  Applications are available through your school and essays must be submitted to your school principal by Jan 15, 2010.  Essays are reviewed by the Providence Marketing Committee in a blind test and winners will be announced by February 28, 2010.   

 

Note:  This scholarship is available only to students who attend New Albany Deanery schools.  It is not available to deanery schools that do not have an eighth grade.

  

GINGIE PRIZE

The Gingie Prize is a four-year scholarship in the amount of $1,000 per year, intended for an eighth grade student wishing to enter Providence High School.  Upon graduation from high school, an additional $1,000 will be made available to the recipient to pursue some qualified form of higher education, including but not limited to, college, an associates degree program or trade school.  GINGIE PRIZE APPLICATION 2009-10 
 
Note: The Gingie Prize takes its unique name from Valerie Reynolds Lander’s pet name, “Gingie,” originated by her own grandmother and used for her by her eleven grandchildren.  Sponsored by her children - a son, Gregory Lander, and four daughters, Valerie McCarthy, Diane Lander-Simon, Connie McCammon and Lisa Lander-Delap - the scholarship honors their mother’s belief in the importance and value of education.
 
"BACKSTAGE Crew" SCHOLARSHIP
The "BACKSTAGE Crew" Scholarship in the amount of $500 is awarded to an eighth grade student wishing to enter Providence.
 

FOR JUNIOR HIGH STUDENTS

 

Through the generosity of our supporters, Our Lady of Providence Junior-Senior High School is proud to announce the following scholarships available for students entering their seventh year (7th grade) in August.  These scholarships are available to current students in the New Albany Deanery schools of St. Paul’s, Sellersburg, St. Mary’s of The Knobs and St. Joseph, Corydon.

 

PIONEER SCHOLARSHIP

The Pioneer Scholarship is a $500 tuition scholarship awarded to ten sixth grade students in New Albany Deanery schools without a Junior High (7th and 8th grades.)  Students who wish to apply must complete an application and write an essay.  Applications are available through your school and essays must be submitted to your school principal by Jan 15

 

Schools will forward essays and applications to the President’s Office at Providence.  Essays will be assessed by the Providence Marketing Committee in a blind test.   
 
FOR CURRENT PROVIDENCE STUDENTS
The following are "internal" for students progressing across the grades.

 

FATHER MIKE HILDERBRAND LEADERSHIP AWARD
The Fr. Mike Hilderbrand Leadership Award contains three $1,000 scholarships:
  • To a Freshman rising to Sophomore level
  • To a Sophomore rising to Junior level
  • To a Junior rising to Senior level

The award goes to one student in each class who has best exemplifies the leadership qualities of the program.   Recipients must be in the forefront of the four pillars of the School Leadership Program – Spirit, Spiritual, Social Service, and a good (doesn’t have to be outstanding) academic standing.

 

IRVIN AND GERRY GETTELFINGER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Irvin and Gerry Gettlefinger Memorial Scholarship is a $1,000 award to one Junior rising to Senior level, to be used to defray the expense of the Senior year.   Recipient is a Junior who best exemplifies the Providence spirit and values and has achieved a good (doesn’t have to be outstanding) academic standing.  It can be awarded to someone who has also been awarded the FMHLA above.
