Highlanders remain unbeaten
For at least one half on Saturday, Providence played with Class 4A, No. 2 Floyd Central at Robert I. Larkin Arena.  The Highlanders led 19-16 at the end of one quarter and 37-27 at the half before pulling away with an 18-3 third quarter.

“What I told the kids before the game was, I didn’t know what the final score was going to be, but they should just play hard and enjoy the atmosphere,” Providence coach Brad Burden said. “We stood toe-to-toe with them for the first half and played hard the entire game. Even in a loss, this should give us confidence going into the sectional.”

Jennifer Smith led Floyd with 25 points. Brigid Morrissey and Camry Hinton were also in double figures for the Highlanders. They had 12 and 10, respectively.  For the Pioneers, Megan Eve hit four 3-pointers and finished with a team-high 17 points. She and sophomore Abby Swartz each had seven rebounds. Callie Ash added five points and a team-high five assists.

Floyd (19-0) travels to Columbus East on Tuesday with its first outright Hoosier Hills Conference title on the line. The Pioneers (6-12) travels to Lanesville on Tuesday and to Jeffersonville on Thursday.

BY Kevin Harris

The Providence girls’ basketball team got on a roll right from the outset and thumped town rival Clarksville on Thursday night at CHS, 69-28. The game was a make-up affair after last Friday’s boy-girl doubleheader between the schools was postponed due to snow.

Sophomore Abby Swartz chipped in 11 and Kallie Ash added 10.  Providence (5-10) outscored the Generals 26-5 in the first quarter and 20-9 in the second to go up 46-14. Clarksville (3-10) failed to score double digits in any quarter.

Junior Cassandra Mulford paced the Generals with nine points.

New Washington 47-45 win over Providence
By GREG MENGELT

NEW WASHINGTON — Katelyn Walker waited exactly 32 minutes to score her first points of the game.  Fortunately for New Washington, her points came at the right time.

With 9.7 seconds remaining, Kriston Sarver took an inbound pass from Casey Johnson and raced to the other end of the floor, where she found an open Walker. With one second left, Walker’s 8-footer bounced on the rim three times and fell in to give the Mustangs a 47-45 win over Providence at James Matthews Gymnasium on Tuesday.  MORE>>>

Charlestown, Silver Creek to meet in Holiday Tournament final
Providence falls to Charlestown, 42-32
BY MIKE RILEY

CHARLESTOWN—Wednesday night’s championship game of the 34th Girls Basketball Holiday Tournament — played at the Bill Dunn Sports Arena — will find Charlestown squaring off against Silver Creek.

The Dragons opened play on Tuesday, having little trouble with Clarksville in a 62-30 victory. The nightcap was much closer as the Pirates held on by holding off a strong defensive effort from the Pioneers to win, 42-32.

Charlestown-Providence

Charlestown led 30-21 at halftime and had increased the lead to 38-24 before they started turning the ball over against the Providence defense. That allowed the Pioneers to score the final six points of the third quarter, four of those coming from Megan Eve. When Leah White scored the first basket of the final period, Providence had pulled to within 38-32.  MORE>>>

“It’s good for the girls to come out of a game with a win,” said Pioneer coach Brad Burden. “We’ve gone through a stretch where we played well against some very good teams and we’ve come up a little short on the scoreboard. Tonight we got a good start offensively and our defense really picked up in the second half.”

Silver Creek defeats Providence, 52-55
By GREG MENGELT
The Silver Creek girls’ basketball team went on a 24-6 run midway through the second half to turn what had been a tight ballgame into a comfortable 52-44 win over visiting Providence on Wednesday.

With 4:30 to play in the third quarter, Providence sophomore Abby Swartz scored on a layup to tie the game at 28 apiece. Over the next eight minutes, Silver Creek produced the 24-6 spurt to put the Pioneers (1-6) away.

The Dragons (5-3) went on a 16-3 run in a span of two minutes and 55 seconds late in the third quarter to take a 44-31 lead. After a late Kallie Ash 3-pointer cut the Creek lead to 44-34 at the end of three quarters, the Dragons scored the first eight points of the fourth for their biggest lead of the night, 52-34.

“That was the run that killed us,” Providence coach Brad Burden said. “They had a couple of balls bounce their way, had a couple of shots fall and we didn’t do anything to counter (the run) offensively. MORE>>>

Despite season-high point total, Pioneers fall to B-town
Eve scores 18 in Providence's 80-65 loss
By Kevin Harris
The Providence girls’ basketball team scored a season-high 65 points on Friday night at the Larkin Center.  But it was not enough to beat Class 2A sectional rival Brownstown.

The Pioneers gave up a season-high point total in an 80-65 setback to the Braves.

Three Providence players scored in double figures. Senior forward Megan Eve shared game-high honors with Brownstown’s Sammie Bane, tallying 18 points. Pioneer senior Katy Flanagan chipped in 17, and teammate Mary Graf had 10.

The trio of Pioneers nailed all nine of the team’s 3-pointers. Eve had four, Flanagan three and Graf two.  Eve and Flanagan each snagged a team-high seven rebounds. Providence junior guard Kallie Ash dished out seven assists.

The Braves led 30-22 after the first quarter and tacked on 18 more points in the second to lead 48-34 at halftime.

Despite the loss, second-year Pioneer head coach Brad Burden lauded his team’s effort.  “The kids fought really hard,” Burden said. “We would cut the lead down to eight or nine points, and then we would have a defensive breakdown. Brownstown is a very good team. I’m just proud of the kids for fighting hard.”

Eve's six treys lead Pioneers to first win
Senior scores 26 in 61-46 triumph at Shaw
By Kevin Harris

Senior Megan Eve nailed a career-high six 3-pointers to lead the Providence girls’ basketball team to its first victory of the season on Tuesday at Shawe Memorial in Madison, 61-46.

Eve scored a game-high 26 points, just three off her career high. Teammate Katy Flanagan recorded a double-double with 12 points and a team-high 12 rebounds. Junior Kallie Ash added 15 points.

It was the earliest the Pioneers (1-2) have collected their first victory in a season since the 2004-05 campaign when they prevailed in their opener. Providence bounced back after suffering a 94-48 home loss last Friday to Class 2A No. 2 Austin.

“It was good to get that first win,” second-year Providence head coach Brad Burden said. “It’s good for our kids’ confidence. The kids worked hard.”

The Pioneers’ next game is a week from tonight when they will visit Pekin Eastern.

Pioneers suffer disappointing loss to No. 5 Austin, 94-48
Jones, McIntosh combine for 48 points for the Eagles
BY JON REITER

CLARKSVILLE — Providence girls’ basketball coach Brad Burden knew his squad faced a tall order as Class 2A No. 5 Austin invaded the Robert I. Larkin Center on Friday night, so he encouraged the Pioneer fans to wear white and make the atmosphere as raucous as possible.

Unfortunately for Providence, despite the big crowd, the veteran Eagles squad wasn’t phased. Austin dominated the Pioneers for the entire matchup, coming away with a 46-point road win, 94-48.

“It’s disappointing because we played them tough last year at their place,” Burden said. “They have everybody back, but we didn’t come out very prepared tonight. We got ourselves into a hole we couldn’t dig out of early, and they took us out of a lot of the things we wanted to do.”  MORE>>>

Pioneers come up short after fast start

Providence led 13th-ranked North Harrison 15-11 after one quarter and 22-20 at the half, but a poor third quarter cost the Pioneers a victory.

The Cats outscored Providence 20-11 in the third period, thanks to poor foul shooting by the Pioneers. Providence connected on just 10 of 25 from the foul line on the night.

“We just couldn’t convert when it mattered,” Providence coach Brad Burden said. “We played well defensively, but we just made too many mistakes.”

After the poor third period, Providence took a 2-point lead with three minutes to play behind the sharp shooting of Megan Eve.

Eve led the Pioneers with 14 points and hit four 3-point shots. She also had seven steals. Leah White added eight points and six assists, and Katy Flanagan had 10 points.

The Pioneers are back in action on Thursday when they host Class 2A, No. 5 Austin.
