CLASS 2A SECTIONAL: Wischmeier too much for Pioneers to handle
Brownstown center records double-double in 51-33 victory
By KEVIN HARRIS
That was not the case though in the latest matchup Friday at the Class 2A Paoli Sectional semifinal.

Schmidt scores 18 in second half of 56-46 win
By Jon Reiter
“We’ve won six and a row, and 10 of our last 11, and sometimes with a team this young, that’s the worst thing that can happen going into the tournament,” Providence coach Lou Lefevre said. “They start just to think they’re really good and that they can win just by showing up. “We were thoroughly outplayed in the first half. We didn’t have any focus or any real energy, but we came out and played a better second half.” MORE>>>

Shawe Memorial faced a large deficit for the second time in six days, only this time, the Hilltoppers were unable to pull a rabbit out of their hat.
Less than a week after coming back from 20 down to beat Rock Creek, Shawe fell behind to Providence by 19 in the Hilltoppers' regular season finale Wednesday. Unlike that earlier game, the Hilltoppers never recovered, falling 41-28 to snap an eight-game win streak.
"You can come back on a team like Rock Creek because they will let you come back. They will come down and jack up three's," Shawe coach Jerry Bomholt said. "This team (Providence) isn't going to do that. They are the best-coached team we've seen all season long and we're not going to come back from eight or 10 down to those guys." MORE>>>
Providence tops Madison Shawe 41-28
A.J. Schmidt scored 21 points and the Providence defense stifled host Madison Shawe on the road Wednesday in a 41-28 win over the Hilltoppers. Providence led 16-7 after the first quarter and 21-10 at intermission as the Pioneers claimed their fifth win in a row and their 10 in the last 11 games.
“It was an outstanding defensive game,” said Pioneer coach Lou Lefevre. “When you hold a team to 28 points, you usually are able to find a way to win.” Schmidt converted on 8-of-8 attempts from the free throw line in the win. Providence will wrap up its regular season on Friday when it travels to New Washington.

Schmidt scores 23 in Providence win
By Greg Mengelt
Providence (11-7) trailed 36-35 at the end of three quarters, and the Lions (10-9) stretched the advantage to four points with five minutes left. Schmidt’s first 3-pointer cut Rock Creek’s lead to 39-38. After a Lion bucket, Schmidt tied the score at 41 with two minutes to play. Schmidt, who led everyone with 23 points, made six 3-pointers in the victory.
“We didn’t defend the top of the key or the corners,” Rock Creek coach Chris Brown admitted. Daly gave Providence its first second-half lead on two free throws. After a Jon Ashby 3-pointer, Daly gave the Pioneers a 47-44 on two more successful foul shots.
“They outplayed us and we stole the game in the end,” Providence coach Lou Lefevre said. While Providence went 13-for-17 from the foul line, the Lions were 9-of-20.
“We were in position to win the ballgame,” Brown said.
Lefevre’s praise was focused on Zev Crawley, who scored his first point of the season on Monday. Lefevre said the sophomore has been a big reason the Pioneers have won six of their last seven games.
“He’s been a player for us the last month,” Lefevre said. “He’s a tremendous defender. He’s a great rebounder. He’s a big reason we’re winning. He’s the best player in the state with (only) one point.”
In his second varsity game, Keontez Malone led the Lions with 11 points. Sean Austin and Keaton Garner added eight apiece.

Poneers earn victory at South Central
By Greg Mengelt
A.J. Schmidt scored 15 points and Bryce Very added 12 as Providence went above .500 with a 48-43 road victory over South Central on Thursday. Providence outscored the Rebels 16-8 in the second quarter and overcame Chip Hockenbury’s game-high 23 points.
“We were down a lot of the first half because we had trouble stopping Hockenbury,” Pioneer coach Lou Lefevre said. “In the second half, we did a little better job on him and that’s why we were able to get a 10-point lead (after three quarters).”
Lefevre praised the inside play of sophomore George Knott, who scored five field goals inside and finished with 10 points. “That helped us turn things around,” Lefevre said. The Pioneers improved to 8-7 with their fifth victory in their last six games. “It was a good, solid team win for us,” Lefevre said.
Favored Bulldogs roll past underdog Providence, 62-35
By Jon Reiter
For 2 1/2 quarters, the Providence Pioneers played David to powerful New Albany’s Goliath, battling the Class 4A No. 4 Bulldogs toe-to-toe on Friday night at the Larkin Center. But this version of the classic tale had a different ending.
The combination of size, strength, skill and athleticism won out, and New Albany (13-2) played virtually flawless basketball over the final 14 minutes and won by a lopsided 62-35 margin. MORE>>>

Providence wins third straight, 53-45 over Silver Creek
By Greg Mengelt
In a game that featured teams that appear to be heading in opposite directions, Providence won its third straight game over Silver Creek at Robert I. Larkin Center on Tuesday, 53-45.
Since Silver Creek won the Silver Creek Holiday Tournament on Dec. 30, Providence has won four of five, while the Dragons have dropped four straight.
“Without a doubt, this was our best team win,” Pioneer coach Lou Lefevre said. “The last game (a 48-37 win over Henryville) was our first good game. This was our second good game. It was a nice win against a good rival.” MORE>>>

Providence gets clutch free-throw shooting in 53-45 win over Silver Creek
By Jeff Robinson • Special to The Courier-Journal
Until Tuesday night, the Providence High School boys' basketball team had been kept under .500 by a major flaw: free-throw shooting.
But the Pioneers, who were shooting 52 percent from the line overall and worse late in games, hit 10of16 in the fourth quarter to stave off a late rally and beat visiting Silver Creek 53-45.
A.J. Schmidt, one of four sophomore starters, made 6of8 down the stretch and scored 21 points to lead the Pioneers (6-6), who climbed to .500 for the first time since they were 1-1.

It was a good win.”

Providence tops Holy Cross 54-38
Bryce Very scored 15 points and Michael Griffith added 14 as Providence High School upended Louisville Holy Cross 54-38 Monday night in boys' high school basketball action.
The host Pioneers (4-6) raced to a 13-1 lead, but Holy Cross closed the margin to six points at halftime behind Justin Eberenz, who had four three-pointers. Providence tightened its defense in the second half, and that was the difference.
“We were able to keep Eberenz from hitting any more threes,” coach Lou Lefevre said. Eberenz paced the Cougars (10-7) with 13 points. Providence connected on 12 of 19 free throws in the final period to seal the win.

Devils hold off Pioneers 55-46 win
By MIKE HUTSELL
For the second consecutive night, Jeffersonville coach Tim LaGrange couldn’t feel great about his team’s late-game performance. But just like he did the night before, he could go home celebrating a victory. One night after seeing a late-game lead evaporate and needing late heroics to beat Floyd Central, the Red Devils saw a chunk of a late lead slip away against visiting Providence at Johnson Arena. Still though, Jeff scored a 55-46 victory behind some late free-throw shooting. MORE>>>

Bradley, Jackson lead Silver Creek past Pirates in holiday tourney final;
Providence claims third place
BY JON REITER
SELLERSBURG — The Silver Creek boys’ basketball team captured its own holiday tournament championship for the first time since 2003 on Wednesday, defeating
“With them, until that buzzer sounds, you’re really on pins and needles,”
Junior Steven Coyne scored only had eight points in the game, but he was the one getting head coach Sean Smith’s praises for playing smart basketball.
“Steven Coyne only had three points in that comeback, but he had two really big ones off that inbounds pass that he threw off that guy’s backside. That was just a real intelligent play,” Smith said.
The basket, which tied the game at 39 with less than three minutes left, came after a timeout following a Pioneers turnover.
Following another turnover by the Pioneers, junior Anthony Lloyd converted two free throws to push the Pirates ahead.
Lloyd left the game seconds later after being fouled. Smith said he was suffering from cramps throughout the game and that Lloyd who scored 14 points should play tonight.
Junior Joe Wilson made two three throws with 9.8 seconds left and pushed the lead to 48-45 before Schmidt missed as time expired.
Wilson and Lloyd led the Pirates with 14 points apiece.
“In the fourth quarter, we went 12 for 15 (from the free throw line) so 12 of our 22 points in the fourth quarter were free throws and those were huge, were absolutely huge,” Smith said. “That’s something we have done well this year, we’ve made free throws all year and we definitely made them in the clutch. Those guys were cool, calm and collected.”
Smith said his team’s goal on defense was to stop Very, along with Schmidt, in the fourth quarter.
It appeared
The Pirates (5-2) are playing this tournament without junior starting point guard Kyle Hayes, who is the team’s second leading scorer.
Smith called the victory “gutsy.”
“They’re a tremendously well-coached team and you got to give them all kinds of credit. They always find a way to win, so to find a way to pull one out, especially when we were down 10 points, is a credit to our kids,” he said.

Floyd's defense fuels 44-26 win over Providence
BY CHRIS STONER
Before the season started Floyd Central head coach Randy Gianfagna said his team’s defense was its strength. After this weekend, the coach looks like a prophet. The visiting Highlanders held Providence to 23 percent shooting en route to a 44-26 win Saturday night and only its second double-weekend win in the last five years.
“I thought our defense was pretty good tonight. I’m pleased. Anytime you get a victory in a rival game like this you’re excited,” Gianfagna said.
Floyd (3-2) held Columbus East to 35 percent shooting in a blowout win over the Olympians Friday night. The Pioneers (2-4) struggled to find the bottom of the nets all night. MORE>>>

Free throw march leads Pioneers past Charlestown
By Jon Reiter
CLARKSVILLE — The Charlestown boys’ basketball squad gave Providence an early Christmas present last night in their 63-54 loss to the Pioneers. Fouls sent Providence (2-3) to the line 38 times last night at the Robert I. Larkin Center, and although the Pioneers converted a middling 25 attempts, the charity stripe made all the difference.
In contrast, the Pirates’ only attempted 8 free-throw attempts, and didn’t go to the line until early in the fourth quarter, when forward Joe Wilson’s two free throws drew Charlestown to within six, 37-31.
“You have to give Providence credit,” Charlestown (4-2) coach Sean Smith. “They were aggressive in going to the basket, they competed and they wanted it more than we did tonight. They are always a tough team for us to play. Once they get a lead, they always know how to play with it, and that’s what they did tonight.”
