John MacLeod Class of 1955 was brother of Margaret (MacLeod) Burke '59 (Larry '58) uncle of Michael L. Burke '84 Kathleen Burke '86 Shannon (Burke) Rush '88 and Mary Beth (Burke) Schuckman '89 and great uncle of Ceci Rush '20 and Lydia Rush '21 passed away April 14 2019. Likely Providence's most notable alumni in athletics John was a standout in his time as a Pioneer not only for his athletic talent but for his ability to rally his teammates. At Providence John lettered in baseball and basketball all four years and set a school record in the 440 and low hurdles the one year he ran track. It was the first year for the team and he served as its captain. He went on to Bellarmine where he continued to excel in sports and began his coaching career at the secondary level after earning his degree in 1959. He coached at a small high school in Monroe County Ind. before becoming the head baseball coach and assistant basketball coach at Cathedral High School in Indianapolis in 1965. Two years later he started his college men's basketball coaching career at Oklahoma University. He moved on to the NBA in 1973 coaching for the Phoenix Suns until 1987. He then coached the Dallas Mavericks for two seasons and the New York Knicks for one season before returning to the college level to coach the University of Notre Dame from 1991-1999. He was the Phoenix Suns' most successful coach "going 579-543 in the regular seasons over 14 years" and taking the team to its first NBA playoffs for the first time ending in an historic matchup and two-point loss in triple overtime according to the Associated Press. His NBA coaching record was 707-657. After coaching at Notre Dame he was an assistant coach for the Suns the Denver Nuggets and finally the Golden State Warriors retiring in 2006. He suffered from Alzheimer's for the last decade.
