Gene Sartini (Hon. '93)
Gene Sartini who was made an Honorary Alumnus in 1993 after leading the football team to the program's second state finals passed away Aug. 3 2019. He was the father of Joe Sartini '77 Toni Sartini Schmidt '78 (Mike '78) Gino Sartini '82 and Nick Sartini '86; stepfather of Billy Noel '88 and Shelly Noel ex-'90; and grandfather of PHS alumni Nicole (Sartini) Cprek '98 Tera (Sartini) Davis '02 Erica (Sartini) Combs '03 Peyton Schmidt '14 Maria Schmidt '16 and Manny Schmidt '18. Coach Sartini coached football at Providence from 1971 to 2011. During his 40-season tenure at Providence he amassed 268 wins two state runner-up finishes 30 winning seasons and five sectional championships. In 2004 he was inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame. In 2012 the football field was renamed Gene Sartini Field in his honor. Coach Sartini also taught history health and physical education at Providence for more than 30 years. All of Coach Sartini's former players managers and staff are invited to a special on-the-field ceremony to celebrate Coach's great legacy of Faith Family and Football on Friday August 9. Prior to the funeral Mass of Christian Burial at St. Anthony of Padua Church the hearse will bear the casket to the Providence campus for Coach Sartini’s final visit to the playing field that bears his name. Please arrive between 9:30 and 10:00 a.m. Friday is a regular school day at Providence and thus parking will be limited. School will be in session and no visitors will be allowed into the school building. Coach Sartini was born of Italian immigrants in Hammond Ind. and attended Columbia Grade School where he played basketball and ran track. At Hammond Tech High School he played football basketball and ran track. On a football scholarship to Louisiana State University he played tight end for one year. Following two years in the U.S. Army he played tight end for the University of Louisville for three years where he continues to hold the receiving record for longest receiving play a 94-yard touchdown pass.
